Thomas Cook wing scholarship for GMAT applying abroad

Thomas cook announces a scholarship programme for Indian students wanting to go to abroad for higher studies: The Thomas Cook wings scholarship.
Now here’s what you need to do:

write a 2 page SOP
Mail it to uspecial@in.thomascook.in

And how it’ll be done?
Students will have to write a 2 page Statement of Purpose (SOP) and either mail it to uspecial@in.thomascook.in or submit it at any Thomas Cook Branch in their city by 30th September 2010. Refer to their official website to locate branch near you; or simply call 18002099100.
I know it’s bit stale news but not too late, you can still apply! There’s plenty of time & I hope you already have rehearsed good SOP. For questions, queries and discussion please visit the Facebook page of Thomas Cook U-Special.
Out of all the received entries, 10 best SOP’s will be shortlisted and those students will be awarded a scholarship worth upto Rs. 35,000/- each. There is also a newly introduced special VISA assistance for students that offers them a smooth travel Experience, catered by Thomas Cook.

Beat The GMAT changing its skin

A big change is about to be seen at Beat The GMAT website, that’s what the founder announced yesterday. Change in which manner and to what extend is still a suspense for everyone as the announcement doesnt reveal much as what to expect. Though I’m not among everyone because I got a mail from BTG to sneak peek the new Beat The GMAT site.
According to Eric, it’s a major, major, MAJOR change for BTG. And I can sense that this change and transition means a lot to him. As a part of BTG team, we’re looking forward to this transition.
Apparently all other online GMAT forums seem to have changed their skin recently! Changes in fonts, colors, background, the width of website, navigation bar (the top bar you usually see at any website) and overall UI (User Interface).

They all have changed, but I’d say, it’s a minor change, just a little bit changes in UI, that’s it. But when I talk about Beat The GMAT it’s a big change! yeah as founder said, it’s a major major MAJOR change.

gmat books reviews available now

This blog post about recommended books was long overdue, I have been asked about books and material several times by GMAT students, so I thought, I should write a special article exclusively for it.

That page, for GMAT books recommendations and review is finally up; (yep, the same page you can access through nav bar above!!) Still there’re some more books I should review. I will do it once I get more time for this. Thanks for the patience.

I’d also write review for beyong GMAT phase (that is MBA admission, b-school research & life at b schools phase) There’re plenty of books out there which are worth reading even if you’re still at GMAT prep phase.

Scholarship for GMAT preparation & MBA application

We are back to scholarship season. I just love this period of the year, I start promoting the scholarship competition & BTG starts receiving applications. This year is no different. Beat The GMAT forums is been doing this since four years and it’s always bigger next year.
This time we’ve doubled the cash price to $500 for each five winners. Manhattan GMAT awards full fledged GMAT course to all winners. (worth $1500 !!) But the prizes from consultation service varies with the rank of the winner. Stacy Blackman Co. is sponsoring consulting for MBA admission & b-school applications.
Rest of the things are the same as usual. Eligibility criteria, application details/format, the essay questions and even the due date! You can verify the details on the official page Beat The GMAT scholarship.
Five winners will be chosen by the panel of Beat The GMAT, Manhattan GMAT & Stacy Blackman Co.

2. (300 word limit): Why do you want to go to business school?
3. (300 word limit) OPTIONAL: Are there any special circumstances you want us to mention? Examples: financial need, major life event etc.

MBA Insider businessweek now free?

I used to visit Business Week website & read a lot b-school admission & MBA application & GMAT related content and even field service management.

However their cream content (read: best of businessweek bschool admissions section) was available only to premium/paid subscribers. & I used to stuck just there as I never subscribed to paid content.
It was (is) known as MBA insider. It’s an online magazine from BusinessWeek which you need to subscribe on yearly basis with 25-30 $. (Sorry, I dont remember the exact amount../ ) & now after a long time when I visited businessweek.com I could browse the site freely without any subscription notice. This is strange. Have they made “MBA insider” free/open to all? Some time back I discovered their forums became open to non-members. thinking that, it could be an obvious move. But there’s a twist. I asked my senior at U.S. to have paid subscription of MBA insider for me. Funny thing is when I visited Business Week, I had prepared myself to start paid subscription but they dont make me pay now!!

I never used the password given by my friend from America but still been able to browse the premium content.
Now I’m confused & therefore I am making this post. Am I the only one (luck>?) who got this access? or all MBA aspirants from India get free access & our brothers from United States have to pay? Or it’s free for everyone?

In that case, why I dont see the subscription request page?

Do you know the url? if yes Please send it to me alongwith snapshot… as url I know dont show any payment option. neither it blocks me from seeing premium content…

Thats funny. I am tempted to say “who cares” but .. BusinessWeek are you listening?

Indian IT MBA applicants, Google adsense & more

Some updates from my side.
I am leaving for a special course which will keep me away from cyberspace for 10-15 days. But before I leave I’ll add a new thread on the forums. It’s about Indian IT Males applying for MBA to various b-schools. Check it out in b-school in general section it will be up by tomorrow morning. (Done now. check it: Indian IT Males MBA applicants )
Also there are some changes I have done in my blog layout. I have removed “partner blog” part from the column. Also I have added list of recommended books for MBA preparation. I felt to add it as application season is coming soon it would be beneficial to the readers. I would recommend to buy these books. Some of the books will help you in long run, not only will help you during the application process but also during your actual MBA course. Well! you can check the amazon reviews if you don’t trust me.
And last but not the least: I have removed Google advertisements from this blog. I just said “not the least” right? it’s a big move from my side. I am worried if it hampers my blog writing motivation (?) But what the heck! I have decided to get rid of it.
Back to Indian IT Male thread,
I am looking for the right picture which could convey my message, which is what delaying this thread from its birth. It has made exclusively for Indian IT Males, one of the largest pool of MBA applicants each year who apply to various business schools. The trouble with these fellow applicants is their average GMAT score is higher than their counterparts. Yet they are so out-numbered than any other group of applicants that they are considered to be commons and hence their higher GMAT score doesnt matter anymore.
Remember your high GMAT score can make you competitive and keep you in the race but lower GMAT score, especially for this group of applicants is detrimental & devastating for their application. Some times I think for Indian IT Males, higher GMAT score is a must, even though, ironically, it doesnt matter to their profiles. Sorry if I confused you by that, you can post your doubts in that thread. Unfortunately I am not available since tomorrow & I am thus initiating thread and leaving it to our members J who would further take it. Ill be back in 12 days by 22^nd September 2008.

Reliance Stanford GSB scholarship for MBA program

And I have returned to day dreaming. Return to aim WSC (cough! Wharton Stanford Columbia). I had said earlier and mentioned in my description line of the blog as well that I am no more aiming for Stanford GSB. Well! and I had my reasons for that. I know its unusual & who doesnt want to have MBA degree from such prestigious and one of the best b-schools in the world? I assessed myself and realized that I am not a good fit for Stanford GSB culture. I think I dont deserve it.
But recent news made me think about my decision again. I know again this time I may not be one the firsts who knew about this scholarships’ (/ fellowship ) announcement. So I ask, & who doesn’t want a full-ride for Stanford anyways.
Reliance Industries has announced and The Reliance Dhirubhai Fellowship. It’s a FULL RIDE scholarship, meaning your tuition fees will be waived INCLUDING all your other expenses such as living at Stanford university, schooling, boarding, books etc; virtually all expenses associated to applying and attending stanford MBA (so, does that include GMAT fees as well??).
The scholarship is need-based & academics of the applicant will be considered in scrutinizing candidates. But the most emphasis will be given to the applicant’s interest in India and her willingness to work in India post-MBA. The conditions for Reliance Stanford scholarship are: Applicants if given the scholarship have to come to India in 2/3 year post-MBA for at least 2/3 years.
The selection process involves two phases. At first phase 50 candidates will be shortlisted & will be allowed to apply to Stanford University for traditional two year MBA program. Stanford will select at the most five candidates from fifty by their .
There has never been such a huge scholarship for any international applicants earlier. It is obvious to think that it would lead to more applications from Indian origin and hence selection process at Stanford would be tough still. But I think it would not be the case. First of all, Reliance candidates are entirely different pool and Stanford made it sure that they will not allocate more than five seats for fifty selected applicants. And even for Reliance Stanford scholarship applicants’ gang, I think it’s difficult to get through in first fifty. As mentioned in official website the candidates will be short-listed on need-base. It is the kind of bread which is difficult to get in India these days. With all India-shining and raining jobs, the average income of person from 20/30 age group has raised tremendously in a decade. Incidentally these very people want career upgradation, want to excel and hence want to join MBA programs of international stature. And the pool of youth who’s actually financially poor is not even aware of such MBA programs.
Still I hope Reliance will be successful in finding the best candidates in all the terms they demand. The last question stuck in my mind is whether this scholarship is genuine? I mean why should I be happy & so all prospective India MBA aspirants if the scholarship is not for those who genuinely qualify for it? I hope and pray it should all be white and transparent. But wouldn’t it be the scheme of Reliance with hidden interest? the scheme: to make Indian ministers and bureaucrats happy by offering their sons/daughters an MBA degree from Stanford?
I hope & pray my speculation is absolutely wrong.
