How to draw custom layer lines accurately on Google Earth.

Google Earth offers border and road lines on maps. It provides up to secondary administrative regions (actually ternary if considered international/country-level border as primary, state-level border as secondary and district-level boundary as ternary layer). If you want to dive deeper you’ve to rely on local maps from books or atlas.
If you have something specific that you do not find on Google maps or any other online maps available, and you want to add it on your map especially on Google earth and save it for future reference; here’s HOW TO for creating your own map lines & borders  accurately on Google Earth using old-school tracing paper technique.

You need:

  1. A PC (a computer with as big screen/monitor as possible)
  2. A tracing paper (semi-transparent white paper)
  3. Pencil (or pen)
  4. sellotape
  5. Google Earth software
  6. Internet connection.

Procedure

  • Sketch detailed map on your tracing paper for your desired area.
  • Open Google Earth app and place tracing paper on user monitor screen.
  • Use sello-tape to glue on the screen. (This requires two persons.)
  • hold the paper and click on ‘add path’ on google earth.
  • Mark the path, name it and save it.
  • There you have it! remember the location where you’ve save the file, it must in kmz format.
  • DONE!

The best part of this kmz file is, it’s tiny, you can send it as attachment and your friends can open it and see it on their PC. Just like I’m now sharing the same file that I created on the above snap.
You would definitely notice if you open the Dahanu Border I created using authentic maps and tracing paper.  download Dahanu Tahsil border in kmz format! Notice the area in picture above? It’s my taluka place Dahanu, and am uploading this file for all my visitors. Google failed to sketch Maharashtra-Gujrat border and Dadara & Nagar Haveli area properly.
Also if you’re a Google Earth fan, share your work or comment below.

Surfing dude wanted- hiring young talent

If you know someone (male or female) who’s looking for job near my residence (where I live, Gholvad/Bordi area) you can help me connect to him. I’m looking for a young talent who can work with me on some projects at my home office. I’m pretty flexible & dont have strict criteria as such… but following is my preferred choice.

  • Should be Graduate or diploma holder (preferably BSc-IT/BCS?)
  • Has sound knowledge of computer operating
  • Good at internet surfing
  • HTML web programming such as PHP (knowledge of PHP, javascript will be bonus)
  • Should be curious and have desire to learn (and adapt)

If you find someone with ANY of above points, send him through. Spread the word across your network and maybe we can find some talent around… I hope you already know my mobile no. Please call  me first instead of send the person directly. Thank you.
PS:
This post is made exclusively for my local friends. It's actually a cross post copied from my Facebook Notes (which, I know, will do a better job than here) But I'm posting it for my own record as I dont trust FB much, also it'll get lost in my fb notes… so for the records. Although I dont think, I'd post job-openings for my business on my personal blog but this particular job is for this domain (archive.amrute.me/) itself and not for my engineering firm.

The best Light-weight pdf reader- foxit

Which software do you use for viewing/reading PDF files?
I stopped using Adobe’s Acrobat reader YEARS back. The last one I had on my system was 6.x I think.
Basically I avoid installing heavy, bloated and sometimes redundant software on my PC. It’s a universal truth that you cannot do without a PDF reader no matter which operating system you have. So if it’s not Abode, there has to be something else. When I run Linux, there’s built-in PDF reader and I dont know who developed it. But while on windows I had to look for alternative & Foxit PDF reader does a great job replacing giant Adobe. And the best part is it’s available for Linux and mobiles.
You can download the software directly for windows and get rid of Adobe, permanently! Once installed you’re promised it will not eat up your memory, space or CPU power in background. It’s a NO BLOAT software. (I drafted this post more than year ago but never get time to upload it & this time I check there website they’ve written same stuff about it- it’s a no bloat software… haha)This time when I check the website they’ve plety of PDF solutions to offer. It’s really great alternative to Adobe’s monopoly over PDF reader.

Open docs cars project

If you’re a car enthusiast, follow auto industry news; read car/automobile /commercial vehicle magazines; take part in online discussion; stop by Discovery Turbo channel or watch weekend TV shows such as Overdrive (CNBC/IBN etc.); keenly watch market trend or maybe curious about Indian auto industry trend; I’ve a feast for you. I’ve been following motor industry since quite a long, whenever I stumble upon newspaper/magazines store I buy some Car related magazines. Don’t make me start cars but to confess, I belong to above group of people & I’m sure there’re many more people crazier than me out there.
Update: GTO of TeamBHP forums is doing great job in mining and sharing the sales stats with the world. http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/indian-car-scene/111873-november-2011-indian-car-sales-analysis.html I now see no use of doing same thing, great work there, GTO!
Just for fun, (yeah, part of my hobby & pleasures) I’m collecting all sales data of all cars sold in India. To keep the data organized, easy to handle, analyze and study; I’m starting a new spreadsheet and uploading it on the cloud (simply on the internet). It’ll be made open for public and people can view or download it. Further I might allow people to edit the document sheet so that other viewers can contribute. Like the open source, right? (but ironically on windows server; yeah! It’ll be on Skydrive to be precise.) I’ll also post guide on how you can collect monthly car sales data and contribute to spreadsheet. Detail post follows once the document is uploaded and made accessible to public. And given my blogging rate, you can estimate when it’d be up! 😛 😉
That’s heads-up. If you’re interested in contributing as well, drop me a line below.  And if you know any motor-trend enthusiast: spread the word. Lets see where it goes, it could be big, who knows! I’m making such doc because it’s not there on the internet, or at least that is what I think; if you happen to know such data readily available on the internet for free please comment below.

New section in GMAT -effective from June 2012

GMAT is introducing a new 30 minutes section named “integrated learning”, removing one of existing AWA section.
A video below provides a sneak peek from GMAC, the makers of the GMAT. The changes will be effective from June 2012.
If you want further updates, follow the @officialGMAT on twitter or the look for buzz-word #nextgengmat
The news was expected since GMAC made announcement in the conference last year about probable changes in GMAT by 2012. More analysis about the changes later… or maybe I’ll leave it for other bloggers/ GMAT companies.

Back to GMATing, back to blogging

Oh yeah! You heard it right, which means you can expect me blog about GMAT here more often than earlier. Yes, back to blogging but not on forums, so please do not expect prompt (/any) replies on forum if you PM me.
Few additions/changes in blog: You must have noticed Knewton GMAT’s link in the middle column, yes if you’re interested in joining GMAT   prep course Knewton is the one I recommend. They’re cheapest yet the best in the town. Go get it.
I seriously want to write resources pages, I hope this time around I get more time for this site to add some content.
I also have GMAT FAQ queued up 😉 they’re somewhere around 75 frequently asked questions I would featured in this blog & try to answer clear, short & simple way. I might post them twice a week, maybe. Although I’m not sure when would I start posting it but as I would, I know I may end up writing infinite no. of FAQ posts … so I should stop myself at 75. All in all, expect this blog to be regularly updated with fresh content.

Brief bio about me

In filling some form I was asked to write a brief bio about me…   I really liked what I’d written there. So I am sharing it here. I never wrote seriously about me anyways so here it goes….

Pranav juggles many roles at a time. He is engineer by profession and has setup a bootstrap startup engineering firm with his friends. While staying at village, believing in decentralisation philosophy, he looks after his retiring father’s fabrication workshop and agricultural farm.
He’s webmaster by hobby and blogs about GMAT and general stuff occasionally. His interest lies in social enterprises, government schemes/initiatives for social change, ^going green^, magazines and internet (& yes! web 2.0). In past time he designs/makes useful articles by re-using useless trash. follow him on twitter @johnycage

Man! am I getting self-obsessed? or have already become one? 😛
