800 GMAT by Kaplan is now Kaplan GMAT advanced 2009.

When I was preparing for GMAT back in 2005 I used to refer books from the library. I could not afford Official guide (yes, it was expensive!) also OG was not popular in India then (?). Talking about India, the only foreign brands which were/are popular here were Kaplan and Barons. And whenever I used to check for Kaplan’s GMAT 800 book, it was unavailable. Strangely, I checked 2-3 public libraries and most booked/engaged book among GMAT test prep books was Kaplan’s 800 GMAT !

Of course it was students’ favourite book! (& mine as well) FYI, that was the first book I purchased for GMAT preparation. It has magical number ‘800’ and a note that says that it’s meant for highly studious and those who want to excel their score to 99th %tile. Oh yeah! so even if you’re not that scholar, by buying this book you feel like you belong to that league. That’s the typical mentality & I was no exception. But I had already done quite a lot of research about GMAT test prep books and Kaplan 800 GMAT was the right choice for me.

Anyways, coming back to the news, as you already might have guessed by reading the title, Kaplan’s 800 GMAT is no more available in stores and it is replaced by new book GMAT advanced. So if you’re currently preparing for GMAT and already have GMAT 800 book, dont buy Kaplan’s GMAT advanced, because content wise both are almost same. To investigate, I checked Kaplan’s store on their website where the book was not available, I was suspicious because I could still locate GMAT 800 in Amazon with really unrealistic price!

Finally this confirmed by the Kaplan representative from GMAT online forums, that both books are same.

windows 7 here to stay [part: II]

I just made a ^fanboy^ post about Windows 7 with their advertisement’s tagline that windows 7 was my idea. Certainly it was my idea and it’s exciting to  see that idea come to life.
I used windows 7 beta version and then I again used windows 7 RC version which not going to expire sooner.  And I’m pleased with the progress. I can discuss what’s new in windows 7 & which features impressive, but I know there’s already thousands of pages written about it. So I’d simply suggest you to visit windows website. I heard that windows 7 breaks the pre-order volume records of harry potter’s 7th book at Amazon. So, yes we have been waiting for this operating system since long…. since we fed up with windows XP, and sorry windows vista was disaster. I’m so glad that I never bought it and/or installed it on my PC.
Incidentally if I look at my OS upgrades trend, I’ve skipped windows operating systems and used alternate upgrades.
Since the beginning I used:

  • windows 3.1 (Oh yeah I remember my early school days 😀 )
  • windows 95 never used it, & never heard of it 😛
  • Windows 98 used for looooooooong time on my own PC as well as on others
  • Windows 2000 I know whats coming in your mind winMe> doesn’t qualify to be listed 😉
  • windows XP yes, always. & still will. on netbook maybe.
  • windows Vista I specifically bought a new laptop which doesnt come the vista pre-installed.
  • windows 7 I’m using it RC version. & I’m pretty much happy with it.

I see the same opinion shared on a tech/web forum where people more than 70% people voted said Vista sucks and they’ve been waiting for newer, better/another OS (now windows 7) from windows. Do you have a choice? of course not, well unless, if you can play around with linux…
But I know windows 7 is here to stay, I’m not saying this because it’s newly launched, I could have said this for vista couple of years back. I’m saying it because I’ve used it. And I’m looking forward to it.

All new favicon for our site & blogging network!

Yeah, I’m really excited to finally put favicon/logo for this blog, parent site and all blogging network.

favicon

favicon

Notice that the picture is of five hands with “V” sign (sign of victory) together forming a star. A start team! 😛 ~~ ah! enough of philosophy~~
This jpg picture I could convert into ico file using a fantastic site called favicon.co.uk, where you can convert picture files into icon files with any size you want. I chose 32×32.
So new start mark you can now see on top left of web browser or RSS contents  feed.
There’s one more note I wanna share, in wordpress run blogs you have to upload favicon file in your theme’s main folder and on root directory, so that you can have it appeared on your rss list too.

windows 7 was totally my idea. [Part: I]

I’ve been using windows since I started using computers. I had never worked on other platform/ operating systems. But we are so familiar with windows and I know there’re hundreds of thousands or may I dare say millions of people who are with me and share the same opinion.
But do I have a choice?
Of course there had been many features missing or there had been lots of things that could have been presented in a better way. Well, I had an idea and microsoft listened! Windows 7 was totally my idea! (& so was many of us) check the following video for the proof 😛
[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YXKoUUojRB8&w=640&h=360]
And the here’s the one I relate to. I’m currently building home network setup. and windows 7 definitely gonna help here.
Oh yeah! I’m a PC & windows 7 was my idea!
PS: Part: II coming soon about the details of windows 7 and things I liked.

GMAT topic specific RSS feeds

I merged my all blogs and made my GMAT strategy blog pretty diluted. I was aware of the loss I would face but I had to do it in order to make it simple. After the consolidation, my only concern was that I should at least give my visitors who come only for GMAT news the GMAT specific RSS feed. So that they dont have to subscribe to my non-sense posts.
There’s simple way to stay away from irrelevant posts of any wordpress blog or follow only specific topics. All you need is adding ‘/feed’ to its category. That means, if you want to follow my marathon related posts only, you can simply subscribe to https://pranav.amrute.me/topic/marathon/feed

So ideally, all my visitors who just want GMAT related posts should subscribe to beating GMAT & beyond category

But if you’re not sort of techie, you probably would have ended up subscrbing whole blog. Well, I’m sorry that I didn’t post it before, it’s something that I should have mentioned first after merging other blogs with GMAT stuff. Anyways, on the right column can you see cartoon of the man seating on the bench reading my RSS feed? OK, now I’m changing it’s Feeds url to GMAT specific topics. So if you follow that man, you’ll get GMAT articles on your PC, without having to visit my site! (And this feed will be ad free! so enjoy the man seating on bench!)

Beat The GMAT changing its skin

A big change is about to be seen at Beat The GMAT website, that’s what the founder announced yesterday. Change in which manner and to what extend is still a suspense for everyone as the announcement doesnt reveal much as what to expect. Though I’m not among everyone because I got a mail from BTG to sneak peek the new Beat The GMAT site.
According to Eric, it’s a major, major, MAJOR change for BTG. And I can sense that this change and transition means a lot to him. As a part of BTG team, we’re looking forward to this transition.
Apparently all other online GMAT forums seem to have changed their skin recently! Changes in fonts, colors, background, the width of website, navigation bar (the top bar you usually see at any website) and overall UI (User Interface).
Check out :

  • Pagalguy.com (the portal as well as forums)
  • GMAT Club (Home page changed but not forums)
  • Score Chase (still as confusing as earlier but changed UI for sure 😉 )
  • And there are some more MBA admission related websites who’ve made changes in UIs

They all have changed, but I’d say, it’s a minor change, just a little bit changes in UI, that’s it. But when I talk about Beat The GMAT it’s a big change! yeah as founder said, it’s a major major MAJOR change.
So, what’s this change is all about?

Global warming will eat my home first

It’s been raining since last three days at my village. (drafted article on 23 July) and I wanted to take video but couldn’t successfully make a good clip, (I told you, I’m not good at this)
So posting my past clipping from Youtube.
Also check the photos I could shoot after rain stopped, I live near sea shore & Arabian sea is eating our compound fence… 🙁 Check the photos I could shoot after rain stopped (better see slideshow in full-screen F11).
The photos taken from my Skydrive folder below.

beating GMAT & beyond to JLTB

If you’re a regular visitor or even visited this blog in past at least once/twice, you’d notice that I have changed my blog’s name from Beating GMAT & beyond.
As you might know this blog is inspiration from Beat The GMAT blog & I liked its title too, infact it was the title of that  blog that attracted me on the first look! Sigh!! it’s 2005 I am talking about! & when I thought of making a GMAT related blog I want something similar name yet I wanted to address beyond GMAT topics as well. Hence the name 🙂
Now you can guess where we’re heading… yeah since I moved this blog from blogger to wordpress (& my personal domain/website.) I’ve made it clear that this blog is not gonna be ‘only GMAT specific’ but I’d add some other stuffs along with my personal updates.
“Johny Learns to Blog” was my signature (yeah MLTR is my fav. you have problem? 😉 ) in one of the online forums later I must have changed it as I dont remember now where I’d used that line.
Now I’m in dilemma as should I use my real name? instead of Johny? It’ll be then “Pranav Learns To Blog” hows that sound?
leave a comment & tell me. Is JLTB is OK or should it be PLTB?
